Westminster Conference

On Wednesday 30 November 2016, the Confederation of Timber Industries held its inaugural conference in Westminster. The event gave Timber Industry leaders and stakeholders the opportunity to meet key decision makers and debate openly on the future of the UK Timber Supply Chain.

Guests were welcomed by Ian Paisley Jr. MP, Timber APPG Chairman, who highlighted the contribution Timber Industries bring to the UK Economy.

The first part of the event focused on Sustainability and Growth with a panel discussion involving Rachael Maskell [MP for York Central], Antoinette Sandbach [MP for Eddisbury], Charlie Law [Sustainable Construction Solutions], Ken Walsh [Danzer UK] and David Hopkins [Timber Trade Federation].

David Hopkins, Managing Director of the Timber Trade Federation [TTF], opened the session showing how the use of timber and wood products can help tackle climate change and carbon emissions worldwide.

The second session focused on Skills, Productivity and Housing. The panel discussion was chaired by Andrew Carpenter [Structural Timber Association] and involved Alan Brown [MP for Kilmarnock and Loudoun], Vincent Stops [Councillor for Hackney Central], Iain McIlwee [British Woodworking Federation], Craig Liddell [Legal General Homes] and Anthony Thistleton-Smith [Waugh Thistleton Architects]

Iain McIlwee, Chief Executive of the British Woodworking Federation [BWF], triggered the debate on the future of UK Timber Industries looking in details at skills gap, modernization and apprenticeships.

Andrew Carpenter, Chief Executive of the Structural Timber Association [STA] remarked the importance of timber frame buildings to fix UK Housing Crisis. He also explained the benefits produced by modern timber construction on environment, life cost, waste reduction, health and safety.

Key points of the panel discusssion included: – UK Housing plans; – Modular housing; – Qualities of timber frame buildings; – Wood framework apprenticeship; – Construction market forecasts.

The event also saw the launch of CTI Policy Reports on Sustainability, Skills and Education, Value and Growth. The publications are designed to map UK Timber Industry providing decision makers and opinion formers with an updated, wide ranging, detailed review.

Parliamentary Drinks Reception, House of Commons

The Conference was followed by a Parliamentary Drinks Reception at the House of Commons. CTI guests had the chance to network and meet several MPs from all across the UK interested in the Timber Industry case.

In her welcome speech, Margaret Ritchie [MP for South Down and Member of Timber APPG] said: “I recommend my parliamentary colleagues to take the time to see how well managed timber presents a fantastic opportunity to grow our manufacturing industry while lowering our carbon emissions. There is a great story to tell about the Timber supply chain and the benefits it can bring to the wider society.”
