On Tuesday 28th February 2017, the Confederation of Timber Industries [CTI] held a seminar at the House of Commons outlining how the UK Offsite Timber Manufacturing industry can help deliver the ambitions of the Housing White Paper.

The session was opened by Ian Paisley Jr. MP, Chairman of the Timber Industries APPG, who highlighted the great potential of the UK Timber Industry.

Andrew Carpenter, Chief Executive of the Structural Timber Association [STA], presented the findings of the latest STA Members survey outlining the challenges UK housebuilders and manufacturers face to increase production.

The seminar proceeded with David Birkbeck, Rapporteur for the Housing Design Awards and Chief Executive of Design for Homes, who focused on how self-build and innovative timber design can boost housing supply across the UK.

Participants had also the opportunity to discover a practical application of pre-manufactured offsite timber building systems thanks to a video showing the Urban Splash Modular Housing project in Manchester.

The following speaker was Thomas Hoepfner, Cofounder of the New Garden Cities Alliance, who explained how Garden Cities Movement can help promote a sustainable and environmentally friendly society.

The panel discussion was concluded by Stewart Dalgarno, Director of Product Development at Stewart Milne Timber Systems, with an incisive presentation on how best practice from Scotland could be extended UK wide. In particular, Mr Dalgarno stated that offsite timber-frame construction is an “oven-ready” solution, capable of delivering around 100,000 new homes in the short term.

The final debate was kicked off by Ian Paisley Jr. MP, who underlined the necessity for the Timber Industry to speak with a single voice to ensure its message and innovative solutions are taken into account by key decision makers.
